Well put. A similar coarsening of our discourse happened in the UK post-Brexit. I recall trying to be conciliatory to a friend, saying "well, there's shades of gray there". He said "no there isn't, you're either with us or against us". Said with a snarl and a level of conceit. I didn't challenge his point, just the polarization - but that was enough.
